Prohibitions and secrets of alcoves in traditional African societies

Abstract

Life, in any human society, requires a certain organization, a certain number of rules to regulate social relations. Rules without which any life in community is practically impossible, man very well risks becoming a wolf to man. » (A. Kantagba, 2018, p. 82). Starting from this axiom, we postulate that in traditional African societies, there are laws, in the form of prohibitions, to regulate social relationships, and beyond that, male/female relationships. Based on a corpus comprising around ten French-speaking African novels and short stories, this research considered from the angle of the magical poetics of I. Go (2014) is also inspired by the work of A. Kantagba on prohibitions and ecology in traditional African societies (2018). It is particularly interested in sexual prohibitions and their social and societal issues. Under the prism of magical transgression, the aim is to show how these societies, through certain codifications, regulate the management of sexual life through prohibitions relating to several orders.

 « La vie, dans toute société humaine, nécessite une certaine organisation, un certain nombre de règles pour réguler les rapports sociaux. Règles sans lesquelles toute vie en communauté est pratiquement impossible, l’homme risquant fort bien de devenir un loup pour l’homme. » (A. Kantagba, 2018, p. 82). En partant de cet axiome, nous postulons que dans les sociétés traditionnelles africaines, il existe des lois, sous forme d’interdits, pour réguler les rapports sociaux, et au-delà, les relations homme/femme. À partir d’un corpus comportant une dizaine de romans et de nouvelles africains francophones, la présente recherche envisagée sous l’angle de la poétique magique d’I. Go (2014) s’inspire aussi des travaux d’A. Kantagba sur les interdits et l’écologie dans les sociétés traditionnelles africaines (2018). Elle s’intéresse particulièrement aux interdits sexuels et à leurs enjeux sociaux et sociétaux. Sous le prisme de la transgression magique, il s’agit de montrer en quoi ces sociétés, par le biais de certaines codifications, encadrent la gestion de la vie à travers des interdits relevant de plusieurs ordres.
