The power of storytelling to encourage respect and diversity

Abstract

This article presents a pedagogical approach focused on diversity through a workshop and an analysis of a story entitled Elmer the Elephant. The approach mainly relied on the creation of a story centered on the theme of diversity and was accompanied by expressive and creative activities. The article offers a brief analysis of the story addressing issues of diversity. Then, the workshop developed around the theme of diversity is presented. The implementation of the activities is examined, along with the factors influencing children's perceptions and how these perceptions are expressed through their drawings. Finally, the outcomes of this practice are discussed.

Résumé

Cet article expose une approche pédagogique axée sur la diversité lors d'un atelier et d'une analyse d'un conte intitulé « Elmer l'éléphant ». L'approche a principalement reposé sur la création d'un conte sur le thème de la diversité et s'est accompagnée d'activités d'expression et de création. L'article propose une analyse succincte du conte abordant les problématiques de diversité. Par la suite, l'atelier élaboré sur le sujet de la diversité sera présenté. La manière dont les activités ont été mises en place est examinée, ainsi que ce qui influence les perceptions des enfants et leur expression de ces perceptions à travers les dessins. Enfin, les résultats de cette pratique sont exposés.
