Cultural Disparities in Doctor-Patient Interactions During Medical Consultations: Findings from Field Surveys in Medical Settings

Abstract

Our study falls within the field of interactional sociolinguistics. It consists of a conversational analysis of several medical consultations carried out with different specialist doctors. For us, it is a question of observing the interactions between doctors and patients during the phases of the medical consultation, paying attention to the themes discussed during the exchanges, to the processes deployed by each of the interactants to transmit the message, construct the appropriate meaning, overcome the lexical distance, account for the different socio-cultural background facts and ensure better mutual understanding.

Résumé

Notre étude s’inscrit dans le domaine de la sociolinguistique interactionnelle. Elle consiste à une analyse conversationnelle de plusieurs consultations médicales déroulées chez différents médecins spécialistes. Il s’agit pour nous d’observer les interactions entre les médecins et les patients pendant les phases de la consultation médicale en prêtant attention aux thèmes abordés lors des échanges, aux procédés déployés par chacun des interactants pour transmettre le message, construire le sens adapté, pallier la distance lexicale, rendre compte des différents faits d’arrière-plan socioculturel et assurer une intercompréhension meilleure.
