The Curse of Rachid Mimouni: A Text of Urgency and Testimony

Abstract

This article aims to highlight the activism and bravery of the Algerian writer, Rachid Mimouni, who believed in the nobility of the cause for which he campaigned by succeeding, through the marvelous power of writing, in saying unspeakable and to explain the inexplicable without hiding under the bushel of fiction. Reading his latest text The Curse, published during the “black decade” of postcolonial Algeria, we understand that the pen is a real weapon. The Curse is intended to be a committed text, an “emergency” text which lifts the veil on the sad reality of the agglomeration of “a dust of individuals”. Dreaming of avoiding the descent into hell of an entire country, Mimouni commits, through violent language, to putting an end to the deep Islamist night, to escape the dark clouds looming on the horizon of Algeria in the years 90. A figure of free speech, he aspires to open new perspectives for his Algeria, worthy of the expectations of Algerians so ruined by fundamentalist injustice and obscurantism.

Le présent article s’intéresse à souligner le militantisme et la bravoure de l’écrivain algérien, Rachid Mimouni, qui a cru en la noblesse de la cause pour laquelle il milite en réussissant, par le pouvoir merveilleux de l’écriture, à dire l’indicible et à expliquer l’inexplicable sans se dissimuler sous le boisseau de la fiction. À lire son dernier texte La Malédiction, paru pendant la « décennie noire » de l’Algérie postcoloniale, l’on saisit que la plume est une vraie arme. La Malédiction se veut un texte engagé, un texte « d’urgence » qui lève le voile sur la triste réalité de l’agglomérat « d’une poussière d’individus ». Rêvant d’éviter la descente aux enfers de tout un pays, Mimouni s’engage, par un langage violent, à mettre fin à la profonde nuit islamiste, pour échapper aux sombres nuages qui se profilent à l’horizon de l’Algérie des années 90. Figure de la parole libre, il aspire à ouvrir pour son Algérie, des perspectives nouvelles, dignes des attentes des Algériens tant ruinés par l’injustice et l’obscurantisme intégristes.
