Interactional approach to a traditional Wolof practice, the xaxar, chanted speech

Résumé

Cette contribution a pour but de faire comprendre le fonctionnement de la chanson wolof, les stratégies qu’elle mobilise pour construire ou pour déconstruire, pour plaire ou pour déplaire. Aussi s’agit-il d’explorer la dimension interactive du xaxar. Ainsi, nous partons du postulat selon lequel toute prise de parole est une interaction. La chanson wolof ne fait donc pas exception. Elle résulte d’une production qui implique un parolier et un auditoire. En ce sens, elle est dialogale, même si les différentes instances peuvent quelquefois ne pas être en présence physique médiate. Cependant, toujours est-il qu’il y a un locuteur qui voudrait transmettre un message à son interlocuteur. À travers une approche interactionnelle, qui s’est elle-même inspirée d’autres approches connexes et complémentaires, nous essayons de mettre en lumière toutes ces interrogations. Le corpus sur lequel se base l’étude est constitué de chansons recueillies en situation naturelle et intégralement transcrites. Pour l’analyse des données, nous recourons de façon conciliante à l’analyse transversale et à l’analyse verticale. En plus de confirmer l’interactivité du xarar, l’analyse révèle que cette pratique, bien que coercitive et douloureuse, vise à préparer psychologiquement.

Abstract

This contribution is an attempt to understand the functioning of the Wolof song, the strategies it mobilizes to construct or deconstruct, to please or displease. It’s also a question of exploring the interactive dimension of the xaxar. Thus, we postulate that all speech is an interaction. The Wolof song is not an exception. It results from a production that involves a lyricist and an audience. In this sense, it is dialogical, even if the different instances may sometimes not be in physical presence. However, there is always a speaker who wants to transmit a message to his interlocutor. Through an interactional approach which has itself been inspired by other related and complementary approaches, we try to shed light on all these issues. The corpus on which the study is based is made up of songs collected in natural situations and fully transcribed. For the analysis of the data, we make use of cross-sectional and vertical analysis in a conciliatory manner. In addition to confirming the interactivity of xarar, the analysis reveal that this practice, although coercive and painful, is intended to psychologically prepare the new married woman for the problems and suffering inherent in the sacred union that is the wedding.
