Mystification of the romanesque space : The Roman City in the colonalist literature in Algéria

Résumé

Le présent article aborde le thème de l’espace dans la littérature colonialiste, et comment il y a été mystifié pour servir une doctrine politique coloniale. Il s’agit d’une lecture dans les textes de Louis Bertrand, notamment celui où il a développé la notion de « villes d’or », thème pivot de sa théorie colonialiste de la latinité de l’Afrique du nord. Dans son ouvrage intitulé les Villes d’or, un essai qui constitue un guide de lecture des œuvres romanesques de l’auteur, on analyse cette notion qui réanime les ruines de la cité Romaine en Afrique du Nord, et lui confère, en la personnifiant, un rôle principal dans le conflit colonial.

Abstract: 

The present article approaches the theme of the space in literature, and how it was mystified to serve the colonial political doctrine. This concerns a lecture in the texts of Louis Bertrand, especially the one where he develops a notion of « Golden cities », witch is part of his colonialist theory about Latinity of North Africa. In a reading of some novels of this author, and of his book « Golden cities », we analyze this notion that reanimate ruins of Roman city, personify them and give them part of the colonial conflict.
