Traditional tattooing in the Constantine region: an aesthetic and therapeutic practice or a use with magical powers? (For an anthropological approach)

Résumé

Le tatouage, en plus de ses visées esthétique et thérapeutique, c’est aussi un signe, une représentation permanente d’un symbole de magie et de sorcellerie. A Constantine, les rites, relatifs à l’usage du tatouage à des fins magiques, s’invitaient chez une partie de la population urbaine et rurale. Ce sont les vieilles femmes qui en gardent toujours les traces. Pourquoi cet art du tatouage comme attribut de magie et de sorcellerie était-il autrefois l’apanage de certaines femmes ? Comment était-il pratiqué au sein de la population ? Quels étaient les matériaux et les outils employés, les techniques de la pratique du tatouage en usage, ce sont les questions auxquelles nous tenterons de répondre dans cet article par le biais de témoignages recueillis dans la ville du « vieux rocher » et sa région.

Abstract:

The tattoo, in addition to its aesthetic and therapeutic aims, is also a sign, a permanent representation of a symbol of magic and witchcraft. In Constantine, rites relating to the use of tattooing for magical purposes took place among part of the urban and rural population. The old women always keep the traces. Why was this art of tattooing as an attribute of magic and witchcraft once the prerogative of certain women? How was it practiced among the population? What were the materials and tools used, the techniques of tattooing in use, these are the questions that we will try to answer in this article through testimonies collected in the town of the “old rock” and its region.
