African National Teams and Their Nicknames: Symbolic, Media, and Identity-Related Stakes
Abstract
This research article, situated within the field of discourse analysis, examines the use of nicknames of African national teams through an African sports media outlet during sporting competitions. Adopting a qualitative approach, it highlights the role of cultural and identity references in the construction of meaning. Our analysis, conducted in light of the Aristotelian typology of rhetoric and lexical semantics, shows that these nicknames go beyond a purely informative function (summarizing or predicting a match) to contribute to the spectacularization of the sporting event (by opposing symbolic animal figures), while creating a sense of connivance with readers and exerting a psychological effect on the opponent.
